PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education)
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) offers a rich framework for this project by encouraging:
Empathy and emotional literacy: Understanding the feelings of mothers and children separated by circumstance.
Respect and compassion: Discussing how society treats vulnerable individuals and families.
Decision-making and consequences: Reflecting on the difficult choices faced by parents in history.
Family and relationships: Exploring different family structures and the meaning of care and connection .
Belonging and loss: Children admitted to the Foundling Hospital often lost contact with their birth families, raising questions about where and with whom they belong.
The topic of Identity and Belonging is central to the Foundling Hospital story where tokens were used as symbols of identity: Each token (button, ribbon, coin) represented a mother’s hope to be remembered and reunited.
