EYFS – Understanding the World

A long time ago, in a big city called London, there was a special place called the Foundling Hospital. The Foundling Hospital was created by a man called Thomas Coram, who worked hard for many years to make sure this special hospital was built. It wasn’t a hospital like the ones we know today—it was a home for babies and young children whose parents couldn’t look after them.

Some mothers and fathers loved their babies very much, but they were too poor or too sick to keep them safe. So, they brought their babies to the Foundling Hospital, hoping someone kind would care for them.

Before they said goodbye, the parents would leave a tiny token—a button, a ribbon, a coin, or even a little piece of cloth. These tokens were very special. They were like secret messages that said, “I love you. I will never forget you.”

The people at the Foundling Hospital took care of the children. They gave them food, clothes, and a warm bed. The children played, learned to read and write, and made friends. Some even learned music and sang in choirs!

Even though the children missed their families, they were part of a new family at the Hospital. They belonged.
