RSE Day - Communicate
Activities for Key Stage 1
Activity 1
The Colouring Game Vocabulary: large, small, thick, thin, all colours, shade, gold, copper, silver, bronze, hard, smooth, bright, long, short, material, felt tip, pencil, crayon, pen, paint sticks etc. Object: To trade with classmates and end up with four colouring tools which are similar/identical. Students must trade among themselves and try to obtain 4 colouring tools which look similar. When trading, they must always trade one for one. Do not let them show their colouring tools to each other. Students can only trade one colouring tool at a time and must find different students to trade with for each colouring tool. Assertiveness skills needed; no aggression allowed.
Talk through with children about what kind of questions we can ask. Encourage children to use descriptive vocabulary. Example: A: Do you have a large, shade of red, pencil crayon? B: Yes, I do. A: What colouring tool do you need? B: I need a small, gold, hard crayon please. A: I’ll trade you a small, gold crayon for your large, red pencil crayon. Then, A and B move on to other people. Once everyone has successfully traded, they can return to their seats and share as a whole class how they found the challenge. What communication skills did they use? |

Activity 2
The ‘Yes, No’ Guided Reading Game Vocabulary: Maybe, I think so, certainly, possible, definitely, absolutely not, agreed, etc. Object: Following the shared reading of the story ‘The Day the Crayon’s Quit’, the teacher begins by explaining that they are going to ask a series of questions about how the children felt about the book and the children are not allowed to answer with the words yes or no. They need to think of different ways to communicate their answers. A: Did you enjoy the story? Are you sure? You like drawing, don’t you? What is your favourite colour? Red? Why do you like that colour? Really…? etc. B: What was your favourite bit in the story? You liked purple crayon best, didn’t you? Or was it green crayon? Can you tell us about your favourite colour? How does that colour make you feel? Really…? etc. |

Activity 3
Guided draw Each child draws a simple picture that can be described and recreated by a friend. They must use lots of different colours and fill the Frame, on the printable sheet. Object: Children work in pairs to create an identical picture following verbal instructions only. Children then work in pairs, child A goes first and communicates as clearly as possible what child B should draw, without them seeing the original picture. Once each instruction is communicated, and the drawing is underway, it cannot be corrected. Only when the picture is complete can the original drawing be revealed. Children can compare the likeness of the two drawings when both pictures have been recreated. Was the communication clear? What would have made it better? How did they find the challenge? |
