RSE Day - Communicate
Activities for Early Years
Activity 1
Show and Tell Send our letter template home to parents/carers in advance of RSE day. Invite children to bring in one special item from home which they can show and talk about with their classmates on RSE day to help to highlight the importance of communication. |
Activity 2
Colourful Hands Children draw around their hand and then choose their favourite colour to colour it in. Ask children to share why this is their favourite colour? How does the colour make them feel? Explain we are all unique, one of a kind, we like different things, enjoy doing different things. What makes us special? Encourage children to share their favourite things during SCARF carpet time. You can do this by sitting in a circle and rolling a ball to children to allow each child time to share and communicate when they are holding the ball. Create a class display of coloured handprints, maybe in the shape of a rainbow, or colourful flowers in a garden. Celebrate the colourful group art masterpiece, recognizing that everyone has an important contribution. A rainbow can’t be a rainbow unless all the colours are present, ‘We are each unique and beautiful but together we are a masterpiece’. |

Activity 3
Makaton signing a song - with Singing Hands Instructions: Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses symbols (pictures), signs (gestures) and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression. Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Almost everything we do involves communication; everyday tasks such as learning at school, asking for food and drink, sorting out problems, making friends and having fun. These all rely on our ability to communicate with each other. With Makaton, signs are used, with speech, in spoken word order. This helps provide extra clues about what someone is saying. Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Using printed or drawn symbols can help people who have limited speech and those who cannot sign or prefer not to sign. Learn the signs for the chorus. What I am is super – Super = Thumbs up What I am is proud – Proud = Thumbs up, move hands up and down in front of chest What I am is friendly – Friendly = Shake two hands together What I am is grouchy – Grouchy = Move clawed hands up and down in front of chest What you are is magical – Magical = Shoot fingers out on both hands What you are is special – Special = Thumb and index finger make a circle like the ok sign, other fingers pointed up There’s nothing I can’t achieve – Achieve = One arm in the air and hand grabs the air Because in myself I believe – Believe – One palm out flat, other hand sideways chop on to the open palm |
